Prada has collaborated with Christophe Chemin who drew the prints for both the women's and men's Autumn/Winter 2016 collection. The Prada store in Sandton City launched the new collections  recently at an "animated evening" instore.

Chemin's special series of original drawings, commissioned by Prada for their new collections, seems to be questioning the history of the world.

In addition, the AW 2016 menswear campaign features a suite of striking portrait allusions.

One of contemporary cinema’s most celebrated actors Eddie Redmayne, who won an Oscar for The Theory of Everything, takes centre stage in the campaign.

Photographer Craig McDean’s pictures invoke 19th century neo-classical paintings, which famously played with surface and depth, illusion and reality. Redmayne, here, assumes a number of roles - hero, villain, revolutionary - either against a neutral grey background, or a rich red split by a romanticist view of idealised nature.

"These photographs continue the spirit of the Prada Fall/Winter 2016 Menswear show, which presented an excursus through times past as a reflection on time present.

"Overall, the result is a contemporary masculinity that aligns worldly travel with intrepid self-knowledge and oblique, original thinking," says Prada.

Christophe Chemin is a French self-taught artist who has a versatile and multitudinous creative out-put which defies categorisation.

"Chemin draws, writes, photographs, directs, films, and designs. He has published four novels and is the creator of numerous films," Prada states in its press release.

"His art extends itself from one medium to the other to develop its ramifications freely, its possibilities, and also not to be trapped in a niche or attached in any artistic field. Ideas always come first.

"Then, each discipline being used develops itself in a complementary and coherent way, like a big map, related to the inner map of Chemin’s own territory, a territory that is always based on a preoccupation with poetry, often mysterious and ritualistic, always facing the notion of danger, guilt, urgency and human dignity.

"From text to visual, novels to huge color pencil drawings, installations to theater set design and artistic performance, collages to photography, video to cinema, Christophe Chemin breaks the limits, resulting in a very intricate world full of inner convictions.

"He likes to say that what he is doing has to do with sewing one thing to another and that he is a seamstress."
