The launch for this year's exciting Sansui Summer Cup was held at Sir James van der Merwe at Katy's Palace and if the launch was anything to go by, the actual race itself will be a memorable party.

The racing fraternity turned out in their finest feathers, including the CEO of the Racing Association, Larry Weinstein, who was resplendant in a sequined tie and Rob Scott of Phumelela who was hosting the "naughty table" of punters and business associates.

The joy of racing is that it brings together people from all walks of life and the Summer Cup is a race that makes Turffontein racecourse come really alive and the weather is always scorching hot and glorious.

This zest for life was reflected at the launch as hostesses dressed in bright colours greeted guests and the spirit of carnival prevailed.

One of the WOW factors was the field band of over one hundred disadvantaged youths, who are broadening their chances of building better futures through music and movement.

Their catchy rhythms had everyone's feet and bodies moving at the launch as they performed in the gallery above the venue.

The launch party was such fun that no one wanted to leave and we were extremely well fed!

The raceday promises roving fashion shows, carnival-style buskers, local bands and one-man musical wonders, as Turffontein Racecourse is transformed into a stunning display of fresh South African talent. Plus there will be a ferris wheel, a Bollywood tent and a beautifully curated Summer Garden for elegant guests.

Like the racecourse itself, which was once a British concentration camp, the Summer Cup has a rich and fascinating history.

It was first run in 1887, and the list of past winners reads like a who's who of racing. It includes Pamphlet (1917), Lenin (1940), Cuff Link (1963), Caradoc (1966), Home Guard (1970) and, of course, Java and Elevation, who both pulled remarkable hat tricks in the famous race. Lenin won the event three years running from 1956 and Elevation repeated his feat from 1972-74.
