Talking textures and torsos

South African artist Mike Newton, whose work "Torsos and Textures" was recently on exhibition at the Alliance Francaise in Johannesburg, is that rare thing -  a painter with several distinct, yet simultaneous, styles. He works as the mood moves him, using very different media. Consequently each painting takes on its own trajectory, presenting a challenge to a curator as to how to group and present his body of work.

South Africa's "Mistress of Spices"

Think of great Indian cuisine and movies like The Hundred Foot Journey, The Lunch Box and Mistress of Spices come to mind ... what a pleasure to think that flavours like that are accessible right here in Johannesburg. Glamorous "curry ninja" Yudhika Sujanani has been making waves over the years with her Fourways eatery Salaam Bombay, The Curry Club which she started up at her home and her fabulous range of Curry me Homes spices. Now she is knocking everyone's socks off with her opulent new venture, Holi Cow, near Montecasino which has the cars queueing up for her sophisticated take on South African Indian cuisine.

Scandi-style has always appealed to me, with its pared down, understated aesthetic and after one week of driving the Volvo V40 hatchback (launched in South Africa last year) I was kind of hooked on this Swedish luxury vehicle brand. I simply did not want to stop driving it, whether it was in town doing errands or out on the open road. The Volvo is a dream car and its quiet discretion feels almost ambassadorial.

It's that time of the year again, when the 2017 WesBank South African Car of the Year Finalists are put through their paces for the 2017 WesBank South African Car of the Year (COTY). A COTY Jury assesses the finalists independently over two days of stringent evaluations at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, with routes and modules designed to test the vehicles in a similar way in which the average consumer would use them.

Raise a glass to Brandy Alexander Day

January 31 was officially Brandy Alexander Day, the only cocktail to have a day officially named in its honour. Those with a bibulous bend raised their Brandy Alexanders in a toast and fortunately South Africa had some superb brandies to celebrate with.

Cape Town studio co-designs superyacht

The 90m ICE-Class Explorer Yacht TABOO is the newest in a series of groundbreaking designs by New York based Gill Schmid Design in collaboration with Tim Dempers Studio from Cape Town.

Ralph Lauren has introduced new designs in the Chunky Chain collection, which spans 18 masterfully crafted pieces, each of which merges a sophisticated romanticism with a bold new spirit.

The red carpet at this year's 74th Golden Globes Awards in Los Angeles reflected the excitement of a new year with some extraordinary showstoppers.  In fact, the jewels stole the show from the couture this year as the stars and nominees positively dripped in gemstones, pearls, vintage pieces and heartstoppingly beautiful diamonds from big name jewellers. Rings, hair ornaments and unusual usage were the order of the day.
